Tahiti party says public at end of tether over politics

1:56 pm on 19 April 2010

The leader of French Polynesia's No Oe e te Nunaa Party, Nicole Bouteau, says fresh elections are needed as the latest political changes are part of the territory's descent to hell.

Asking for an urgent dissolution of the assembly, she has written to the French overseas territories minister, Marie-Luce Penchard, to say the territory's disastrous economic situation is to a large extent due to the actions of the elected politicians.

France, which has changed the electoral system three times since 2004, has said it will work towards a new system, but has in general ignored Tahiti's input in recent years.

Mrs Bouteau has told RFO television the instability must stop.

"Do you think Polynesia can allow itself an umpteenth, I believe 11th, overthrow of a goverment with six months of immobility? Civil society can take no more, the people can take no more."
