French Polynesia opposition hopes Tong Sang will resign

French Polynesia's opposition says it is still considering a motion of no confidence in the government of Gaston Tong Sang, while hoping he will resign.

This comes after last week's collapse of his ruling coalition which refused to back its own candidate for the assembly presidency, leading to the surprise election of the opposition's Oscar Temaru.

There have been additional calls for fresh elections as a bid to end the political instability.

The opposition's Tea Hirshon says France has routinely dismissed such calls.

She says a challenge may be mounted soon.

"We are not yet there, we are hoping that the actual president, having lost the majority, will resign. So far he doesn't seem to want to resign."
