French Polynesia assembly president election put off

3:31 pm on 9 April 2010

There have been further delays in attempts by the French Polynesian assembly to elect a new assembly president.

A fresh bid will be made tomorrow after the afternoon session was suspended.

The morning session agreed to end the one-year tenure by Philip Schyle and to proceed with the election of a new assembly president.

No candidate has been put forward yet.

A deal within the ruling coalition dating back to November is to give the position to the Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party of Gaston Flosse.

Meanwhile, there have been two demonstrations in Papeete against the political instability, causing traffic problems.
