The American Samoa Department of Public Safety is adding two drug sniffing dogs to its staff for the first time.
DPS acquired the dogs using a grant from the Criminal Justice and Planning Agency and funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
The Acting Deputy Commissioner of Public Safety Leseiau Laumoli says two DPS officers underwent an extensive course on handling the dogs which will be used for drug searches.
He says the animals will be a big boost to drug investigations and represent a major investment by DPS to combat drug crimes.
The Customs Division has been using drug dogs for nearly 20 years.
