American Samoa's House of Representatives has approved a bill banning smoking in enclosed public places.
The ban applies to buses and taxis and it spells out what's considered a restaurant and an enclosed area.
Smoking will also not be allowed in any workplaces.
Violations lead to fines of 50 US dollars for individuals for a first offence and double that for the owners of public places.
Subsequent offences are to attract higher fines.
The bill now goes to the Senate for its consideration.
