Federal money no silver bullet for Guam education system

2:03 pm on 29 March 2010

Guam's Teachers Federation says 83 million US dollars in funding from the federal government is just a drop in the bucket of what the education sector needs.

The Department of Education is to recieve the money under President Barack Obama's Stimulus Package.

The Federation's President, Mack Rector, says education has been underfunded for 20 years.

"We've spent less than half the national average per student for the last 15 years on Guam. So we been in such dire straits, we are so behind in maintainence and supplies at the schools that....you know, it sounds like a lot of money and it will be useful and it will go to good things like fixing up our broken down buildings and doing a little maintainence. But unfortunately it really is only a drop in the bucket."

Mack Rector says the Guam school system is underfunded by about 200 million US dollars a year.
