Police in French Polynesia arrest Hoffer

11:55 am on 12 March 2010

Police in French Polynesia have arrested a businessman, Rene Hoffer, at his home in order to press a range of charges.

RFO radio says Mr Hoffer is to be prosecuted for among other things endangering others, withholding goods from import duties and contempt of court.

He has been involved in a range of legal disputes, recently over the importation of Tahiti's only Rolls Royce vehicle, which French customs officials have seized.

Mr Hoffer was one of three men claiming to be president at the height of the political turmoil in 2004.

He is also an unsuccessful candidate for a French Senate seat.
