Residents of Penrhyn in Cook Islands call for hurricane shelter

11:55 am on 1 March 2010

The Island Secretary for Penrhyn Atoll in the Nothern Cook Islands has asked the Government for a hurricane shelter following a slew of recent storms.

Andrew Vaeau says people are feeling frightened after the persistent bad weather damaged houses and caused wave surges to come 20 metres in land.

He says the government has to consider a purpose built shelter or else people will leave Penrhyn for New Zealand and Australia.

The MP for Penrhyn, Wilkie Rasmussen, says he is aware of the islanders concerns.

Mr Rasmussen says it is always difficult to balance the government's books and it puts forward what money it has.
