Pay delayed for education workers in American Samoa

12:13 pm on 1 February 2010

Some 300 plus employees of the American Samoa Department of Education will not get paid on the government pay day due to problems with a federal grant funding source.

Samoa News reports that the affected employees, including teachers, were to be paid under the Consolidated Grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

But the American Samoa grant submission has yet to be approved and there are no funds available.

The newspaper quotes local education department director Dr. Claire Poumele saying that she has been assured that the affected employees will get paid tomorrow using other local funding sources while the Education Department awaits final approval of it's grant fund application.

However, the government's Treasurer, Magalei Logovi'i disagrees, saying that 300 plus employees will not receive their paycheque unless the grant is approved.
