Papua New Guinea's most wanted criminal has reportedly called a national radio program and asked the country to forgive him.

William Kapris has been on the run for two weeks after he and 11 other prisoners escaped from a maximum-security jail near Port Moresby.

He's the alleged ringleader of several high profile bank robberies.

Radio Australia reports that a man claiming to be Kapris called into NBC radio's national breakfast program.

He didn't want to go on air but told the hostto ask the country to forgive him and to ask his family to pray for him.

The host told his listeners Kapris said he was injured and could not travel far.
