One of the 12 high-risk prisoners who escaped from Papua New Guinea's Bomana maximum security unit two weeks ago has been recaptured.
The newspaper, The National, reports that Oliver Ben Gabi was caught in the hills of Sogeri Plateau in Central Province late on Friday and rushed to the St John Hospital in Gerehu for treatment .
Correctional Services officials claim the prisoners broke out of the prison near Port Moresby with the assistance of up to three warders.
The escapees include PNG's most notorious criminal, William Kapris, who was awaiting trial over bank robberies and also stands accused of rape, murder and a plane hijacking.
Police, who have launched a massive hunt operation for the escapees, say Gabi has now been transferred back to Bomana prison after receiving treatment for severe dehydration.
Police are combing Sogeri Plateau for the other prison escapees, believed to be hiding in that area.
