American Samoa's Governor wants to create new Department of Labour

12:14 pm on 14 January 2010

American Samoa's Governor says legislation will be submitted to set up a new Department of Labour in the territory.

Labour issues are now under the Department of Human Resources, but the governor's administration says research has shown that there's a need to separate its functions.

Our correspondent, Fili Sagapolutele, reports.

"During his State of the Territory address the Governor announced he will be sending to the legislature a measure to create a Department of Labour in American Samoa under the jurisdiction of the territorial government. He says that this department will oversee issues dealing with immigration policies for workers as well as safety issues for workers in both the public and private sectors."
