New Caledonia president takes legal action against blogger

New Caledonia's president, Philippe Gomes, has taken legal action against a blogger for publishing a photo of him attending a government-funded staff reception at a Noumea hotel last month.

Although the photo was taken by a government photographer, Mr Gomes claims that the event was a strictly private event.

He has seized the judiciary and wants Franck Theriaut, who runs the Caledosphere website, to be convicted to pay him 3,000 US dollars for printing the picture.

Mr Theriaut was summoned to appear in court within less than 24 hours but managed to have the hearing deferred until early next month.
