The met service in French Polynesia says last December was the hottest month registered in Tahiti since measurements began in 1957.
Forecasters have told Tahitipresse that the average temperature was 29 degrees.
This is 0.1 of degree more than the previous record set in 1998.
They say the high temperatures were accompanied by sunny and dry weather, leading to water surface temperatures being two degrees warmer than usual.
The forecasters expect the next weeks to remain warmer than the long time average and in the Society Islands also wetter.
