11:13 am on 8 January 2010

The American Samoa Government has extended Star Kist Samoa's tax exemption ,which expired at the end of last December, by three months.

The cannery had asked for only a three month extension because according to corporate Spokesperson Mary Sestric, it is waiting to learn the outcome of efforts to adopt the American Samoa Protection of Industry , Resources and Employment plan.

She said the cannery cannot make any long term decisions regarding its American Samoa operations until it has that information.

Ms Seistric added that although they are not announcing any further workforce reductions at this time, the cannery is continuing to evaluate the cost effectiveness and competitiveness of its operations in American Samoa.
