A tribal member in Papua was killed and at least eight more were injured when a fight erupted on Tuesday between two groups in Kwamki Lama - a regency in Mimika.

The fight followed another clash the day before which injured nine people, including one who later died in hospital.

Local police intervened in an attempt to broker peace between the warring groups.

The conflict between the upper and lower groups in the village is continuing.

Dozens of police have been deployed to stop the conflict spreading to other areas.

Mimika Legislative Council acting speaker, Trifena Tinal, said the council would coordinate with police to help settle the fight between the two warring groups.

Clashes between groups are rampant in Mimika home to one of the world's richest gold mines.
