Leptospirosis warning in Fiji after Cyclone Mick

5:54 pm on 23 December 2009

Fiji's Agriculture Ministry is calling on communities affected by Cyclone Mick to be aware of water-borne illnesses, including leptospirosis.

The cyclone swept over the country last week, causing extensive damage.

The Fijilive website quotes the director for Animal, Health and Production, Shiu Chand as advising people to wear covered shoes and gloves in stagnant water to avoid infection with the leptospirosis bacteria.

Mr Chand also says animals should be kept away from flood affected areas for at least seven days after flood waters have receded as they can carry the bacteria.
