Hawaiian Airlines is installing blended winglets on the first of its Boeing 767-300 jets in a bid to reduce fuel usage.
The airline in a statement yesterday says the newest and biggest green initiative will significantly reduce fuel usage and carbon dioxide emissions of its aircraft.
Standing 11-feet tall and extending upward from the end of each wing the winglets improve efficiency by smoothing out airflow across the upper wing near the tip.
According to the Honolulu-based carrier winglets reduce aero-dynamic drag which means less thrust is needed to fly the same speed.
The airline says the winglets will save between 700 and 800 gallons of fuel for every round trip between Hawaii and the west coast of the US mainland or an estimated 2-million gallons of fuel per year.
