The Sydney-based Fiji Democracy and Freedom Movement says Commodore Bainimarama's actions are ill-conceived because Fiji needs Australia and New Zealand more than they need it.
Its president, Usaia Waqatairewa, says the decision shows no concern for the interests of the people of Fiji, which is a third-world country that needs aid and tourists from its rich neighbours.
He says the expulsion of the diplomats shows the travel sanctions imposed on Fiji are having an effect.
"I urge the Australia and the New Zealand government not to relent on these sanctions, to maintain the pressure there, so that these people will learn their lessons that seizing government illegally, while they do not have the capacity to properly govern a state, they they will learn their lesson, to learn to know their limits. He is just a deckhand in the navy and he should stick there."
Usaia Waqatairewa says Commodore Bainimarama is protecting the interests of the few who are on the gravy train of his regime.
