The Solomon Islands Electoral office has made legal clarifications on the nomination of former Prime Minister Sir Allan Kemakeza in the by-election for the Savo Russell islands constitutency.
Kemakeza was jailed this year for six months for a 2002 attack on a Honiara law firm.
The Returning Officer for the Savo and Russells by-election, Enley Sade, says the Electoral Commission is satisfied that the nomination of Sir Allan should still stand according to the electoral law.
Under the electoral law, the Returning Officer is appointed by the Solomon Islands Electoral Commission and is the only person responsible for receiving and accepting nominations for candidates.
Mr Sade advised the Electoral Commission that while questions have arisen regarding Sir Allan's nomination, these have come after the nomination was accepted.
The Savo and Russells constituency by-election takes place today.
