Samoa has a new Police Commissioner

5:16 am on 21 September 2009

Samoa's Ministry of Police and Prisons has a new boss.

Lilomaiava Fou Taioalo's appointment has been endorsed by cabinet and he replaces the current Police Commissioner, Papalii Lorenese Neru, who completes his second three year term at the end of this month.

Papalii did not reapply for the position following the outcome of a Commission of Inquiry into the smuggling of firearms from American Samoa aboard the police patrol boat last year.

The commission recommended that criminal charges be filed against Papalii and the patrol boat captain Logoitino Filipo.

But instead cabinet censured the commissioner and demoted the captain.

Meanwhile, the cabinet has also endorsed the appointment of three women to head government ministries.

Tekauita Lusia Sefo Le'au replaces Silafau Paul Meredith at the Ministry of Revenue.

Galumalemana Nuufou Petaia is the new CEO of the Ministry of Education.

And Vaosa Epa replaces Auseuga'efa Va'asatia Poloma Komiti at the ministry of the prime minister which includes immigration and cabinet.
