3:42 pm on 28 August 2009

The United States Navy commander on Guam, Rear Admiral Douglass Biesel, has presented Guam's Governor Felix Camacho with a letter from US President Barack Obama paying tribute to local sacrifices in World War Two.

In the letter, President Obama recognizes Guam's 65th Liberation Day and pays tribute to the island's people for their bravery during the Japanese occupation in World War Two and their resolve to restore freedom.

The Pacific Daily News reports that Commander Biesel read a copy of the letter during the Governor's annual Liberation Day breakfast.

The letter is to be displayed in the governor's chambers until it is relocated to the Guam Institute of Natural History and Cultural Heritage.
