Food shortages in Solomons atoll communities

6:55 am on 28 August 2009

A team of Solomon Islands Government officials, the Red Cross and the Temotu Province Disaster Mitigation office have been conducting a weeklong assessment of the Reef Islands after reports of severe food shortages in the atoll communities.

The current cycle of food shortages is also affecting Santa Cruz, whose residents help supply the town market in the provincial capital, Lata.

For four weeks people in Lata have been scrambling for the little produce that come into the market.

Lata residents now mainly rely on grain and wheat supplies from overseas that they obtain from wholesalers in Honiara, which is over six hundred kilometres away.

The food assessment team's report is expected to be made public next week.
