The Sugar Ministry in Fiji believes farmers do not need representation in the industry after a decision was made last week to dissolve the Sugar Cane Growers Council.
Its Permanent Secretary, Parmesh Chand, says farmers can take their grievances directly to the Fiji Sugar Corporation or the Sugar Industry Tribunal.
He adds that so far, the reform has focused on seeing how best the industry institutional structure can be rationalised, so that there is a much leaner structure in place which costs less in terms of overheads to both the farmers and industry.
The Fijivillage website reports that through the sugar industry plan, consultations are underway to reform transportation, harvesting and field operations.
