The establishment of a new water authority in Fiji is expected to accelerate the development of run down infrastructure.
The Fiji Times newspaper reports the Water Authority of Fiji chairman John Prasad saying the authority would begin operation next January.
The paper quotes him saying it is expecting the Water Authority to accelerate the development of the run down infrastructure for water and sewerage in Fiji.
He says there will be signs of this in the papers, where various tenders are being called and the Government has been making announcements about progressing capital works programs.
Last week, Water and Sewerage director Sereicokocoko Yanuyanurua said salt water had corroded old pipes and waste was seeping into the soil and the waterways of suburbs and a $95 million Fiji dollars loan from the Asian Development Bank would be used to replace sewer pipes that were more than 50 years old and have never been replaced.
