Call for massive strike in French Polynesia

5:45 pm on 13 August 2009

Seven French Polynesian unions have given notice that they plan to begin an open-ended strike in five days.

The action is based on a list of 14 grievances, with the central concern being a demand to shore up employment as job losses continue.

In their strike warning, they call for the government to push ahead with public sector works.

The stoppage would target about 80 businesses in both the public and private sector.
