Fiji academic says 2006 coup a blot on President's legacy

A Fiji academic says President Ratu Josefa Iloilo leaves a mixed legacy.

Steven Ratuva from the Centre for Pacific Studies at the University of Auckland, says before the 2006 coup, the President was seen as humble, down to earth and was very popular.

"I think what will remain as a blot on his CV would be his role in the coup, in terms of providing the legitimacy for the coup processes and also in the abrogation of the constitution. Although it has been argued that these were not really his personal intentions, that he was forced to carry out those things."
