Tailevu people concerned about Fiji mahogany harvesting

The people of Tailevu in Fiji will formally raise their concerns over the failure to re-plant mahogany at Nukurua.

The Fiji Live website reports provincial council members are to draft a letter to the Government raising the matter.

The provincial council meeting in Nausori this week was told that the Fiji Hardwood Corporation has been harvesting mahogany for eight years, clearing more than 40 hectares, yet there has been no initiative or attempt to replant the milled trees.

A representative of the Ministry of Forests, who is not named by the web site, told the meeting this must be a huge concern for the province, given all the talk about sustainability.
