Reports from Fiji say there is renewed interest on the part of the United Arab Emirates to get an air services agreement with Fiji.

The Fiji Times quotes the civil aviation director, Akuila Waradi, as saying Dubai has taken the unusual step of approaching Fiji.

This comes amid signs that a Dubai company is also interested in running Fiji's Nadi airport.

The newspaper says the Dubai-based carrier Emirates is expected to extend its services to Fiji before the end of the year.

The idea has been welcomed by the Tourism Fiji chairman, Patrick Wong, who says the addition of a new carrier would add better connections and more options for holiday travellers.
