Samoa chiefly title remains with MP pending more court action

Samoan independent MP in Samoa, Tuia Paepae Letoa, remains holding one of the two parliamentary seats for Safata constituency while a dispute over the ownership of the chiefly title Tuia of Vaie'e village continues.

The chief executive officer of the Ministry of Justice, Masinalupe Tusipa, says the MP is still the holder of the title Tuia, at least until a fresh hearing of the case in November.

The Court of Appeal ordered a new hearing after it was found that one of the senior judges in the original hearing which awarded the title, had a conflict of interest - namely that he is related to the MP.
