The French Polynesian government has announced a 4,000 kilometre fibre optic undersea cable is to be operational by June 2010.

The Local Digital Economy Minister Jacqui Drollet told a press conference at the weekend the so-called Onotua cable will cover a distance of about 4,520 kilometres and will link French Polynesia's main island of Tahiti and Hawaii's Big Islands.

The Oceania Flash reports apart from the main trunk, once landed on Tahiti, the high speed connection is scheduled to be split into smaller branches, to neighbouring Moorea, Huahine, Raiatea and Bora Bora islands.

It reports once implemented and commissioned, the new connection is said to revolutionise the connection speed currently experienced in French Polynesia and boost it to as fast as 640 Gigabytes per second.

The estimated cost of the project is about 102 million US dollars.

Of the total amount, French Polynesia's government will be funding about 17 million US dollars.
