American Samoa governor warns of cannery closure plans

7:04 am on 27 April 2009

The American Samoan Governor's Office has received information indicating that one of the canneries is making plans to close down.

Governor Togiola Tulafono says while his office cannot verify this information it is taking it very seriously and have been looking into it.

Star Kist Samoa and Samoa Packing employ more than 4,000 workers.

Togiola said he has been apprised of some cannery preparations to meet the rapidly rising cost of minimum wages but he has not been informed of any final plans.

The next 50 cent increase to the local minimum wage is due on May 27th.
