Fiji bus companies seek subsidies to survive

The owner of one of Fiji's largest bus companies says businesses, including his own, will begin to close up if the interim government does not give the industry more subsidies.

Fiji Live reports that Dee Cee's Bus Services director Dewan Chand said the interim government stepped in last year and help the industry and needs to do so again.

It quotes Mr Chand as saying a bus company which owns five buses ended operations in Baulevu two weeks ago because of the road conditions and prices of fuel and spare parts.

Mr Chand, whose company employs more than 200 workers says the government has to step in and provide some more subsidies to help the industry.

He says the last thing he wants to do is make employees redundant during hard times.
