The Fiji soldier found guilty of killing Tailevu villager Nimilote Verebasaga has been given a three-year jail sentence.

The Fiji Times reports that Private Maika Vuniwawa was convicted of manslaughter after entering a guilty plea.

Mr Verebasaga died on January 5th 2007 as a result of sustaining severe injuries to his internal organs after being taken into military custody that morning.

The judge, Justice Daniel Goundar, says Vuniwawa made Mr Verebasaga crawl on the ground and while he was down, he assaulted him.

The killing was the first by the security forces after the military had seized power the preceding month.
