CNMI governor expects extension to ward off federalisation move

2:42 pm on 30 March 2009

The Governor of the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas, Benigno Fitial, says he is confident the Department of Homeland Security will grant his request for a 180-day extension to the enactment of the federalisation law .

He says there has been no strong opposition to the request.

The Consolidated Natural Resources Act, signed into law by President Bush in 2008, will extend federal immigration laws to the CNMI.

The start date is June the 1st, although the law allows for a 180-day delay.

A decision on any extension must be made 30 days before the June 1 start date.

The CNMI has sued the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of Labor to stop the implementation of the law.
