New Caledonia is continuing to take extra measures to help contain the spread of dengue fever.

One woman has died from dengue this year, and the territorial health service says 3,300 people have been infected since the beginning of the year.

The head of the service, Dr Jean-Paul Grangeon, says about 100 new cases are confirmed each day and ten percent of those infected need to be hospitalised.

Dr Grangeon says they are running community awareness campaigns.

"We're doing a mass media campaign to try to make people more responsible. We're asking them to destroy all the nets of mosquitoes and to clean up around the house and we are asking for the last month to use some repellent to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes."

Dr Jean-Paul Grangeon says health staff are also spraying the homes of people infected.
