The dengue outbreak in New Caledonia has claimed the life of a 59-year-old man.
The health authorities have confirmed rumours that the man died two weeks ago after suffering from dengue symptoms for several months.
The victim lived in Magenta near Noumea.
So far, 1,500 people have contracted dengue this year in what is viewed as an epidemic that could eclipse the outbreak of 2003.
According to the authorities, about 20 percent of those infected suffer from serious complications, with ten percent needing hospital care.
