A human rights advocate says the impending federalisation of the Northern Marianas is well overdue and will protect the rights of foreign workers and ease human trafficking concerns.
The U.S federal authority takeover from June 1 will mean Washington's labour and immigration laws apply.
Wendy Doromal, who lived in the CNMI for over a decade, says she has more faith more in the U.S federal goverment than in the current unfair labour and immigration system in place in the Northern Marianas.
"Which basically was a system where workers were indentured servants for years and years. I know workers who have been there for 30 years. There's no pathway to citizenship, no type of status, they have absolutely no rights and no way to get rights. The amount of labour abuse and the cheating of workers there is incredible."

The Governor and CNMI Congressman are trying to get a 180 day stay on federalisation, claiming the move will be detrimental to the economy.
