Vanuatu's government has announced a new AusAID-funded programme to rehabilitate and maintain the country's road network.

The Port Vila Presse reports that Australia will contribute 11 million US dollars over three years to the Vanuatu Transport Sector Support Programme.

The Prime Minister Edward Natapei says infrastructure development is a vital economic investment for the country, and he says his government is committed to reversing years of neglect.

He says the new programme will complement work upgrading and building critical infrastructure on Efate and Santo, being undertaken by the Millenium Challenge Corporation in conjunction with the New Zealand aid agency, NZAID.
