Auckland Council praised for ensuring huge Pacific festival continues

New Zealand's opposition Labour Party spokesperson on Pacific Island Affairs, Luamanavao Winnie Laban, is pleased that the annual Pasifika Festival in Auckland will go ahead next month.

The Auckland City Council stepped in to save the festival which attracts over 250-thousand people over two days after some government agencies withdrew their funding.

Luamanavao congratulated the Auckland City Council for supporting the festival which she says has become a major event for the Pacific community with a significant number of positive social and economic, as well as cultural, spin-offs.

She says the decision of several major sponsors such as the Accident Compensation Corporation to pull funding from this year's event, is very disappointing - considering these agencies still have some work to do to connect with Pacific people.

However, the festival which has run over two days in the past has been reduced to a one day event to bring down costs.
