Fiji Tourism boss says resort access improving

12:35 pm on 12 January 2009

The chairman of Fiji Tourism says many resorts on Viti Levu's coral coast and outer islands should be more accessible by road from today.

Patrick Wong says that the biggest tourism problem during the weekend flooding has been transporting visitors to and from Nadi airport.

He says most resorts remained open, with emergency ferry services set up to cater for stranded tourists.

"To areas like Port Denarau - I understand now the roads is partially open and roads down the Nadi back road and through to Nadi town were shut off due to the high tides and severe flooding. A lot of them were actually about one to one and a half meters underwater. And access down the Coral Coast too down the Queens' Highway several areas have been actually shut off as well but we feel that by today a lot of the flood waters would've subsided, heavy rain has stopped and there's a likelihood of most of the roads opening up again."

Patrick Wong says most resorts remain open for business.
