PNG Police Commissioner pushes for removal of all squatter settlements in Moresby

8:20 pm on 22 December 2008

Papua New Guinea's Police Commissioner says he is pushing for all squatter settlements in Port Moresby to be destroyed without delay.

Gary Baki has defended the move by Port Moresby police to destroy the capital's Tete squatter settlement where the alleged killers of one of the country's most prominent businessmen had lived.

Following the murder of Sir George Constantinou last week, there was an immediate clamour for retribution, with police and the Governor having to dissuade people from marching on the Tete settlement.

Then on Thursday, 50 houses there were levelled under police supervision.

Gary Baki says such settlements have provided havens for criminals for too long.

"I have already informed my minister, the Minister for Internal Security, I have informed him that I am going to put a cabinet submission for 2009 requesting government to address this issue, to remove all settlements within Port Moresby city, every one of them. If they are not recognised, if they are living on government land, they don;t belong to Port Moresby city, they go back to where they come from."
