Vanuatu police say they have evidence that two opposition MPs, Ralph Regenvanu and Moana Carcases, were complicit in plans by prisoners to burn down and escape from the high risk detention centre in Port Vila last week.
Around 30 prisoners broke out of prison after burning down the former French arm of the city's detention facility in protest against what they claim were inhumane conditions.
The jailbreak came as a report, thought to have been written by the prisoners, last week reached offices of Government officials and NGOs.
It complained of ill-treatment and poor living conditions at the prison.
While the prisoners have all been recaptured, the deputy police commisioner, Arthur Caulton, says the MPs have been granted bail after being charged with aiding the breakout.
"We understand that there might have been some connection between the two MPs and the prisoners prior to burning down the prison house and then, all of a sudden, they were the ones to pick them up when they escaped from prison."
