Futuna to get trees to offset French minister's travel emissions

The French junior minister in charge of overseas territories, Yves Jego, says 15 hectares on the island of Futuna will be replanted with pines to offset the emissions of his air travel in the past eight months.

Mr Jego says more than 60,000 US dollars will be spent to that end to compensate for the 350,000 kilometres he has flown to make 21 trips to French overseas territories.

He has also met the island's two kings who say they want a direct administrative link to Paris as they feel to be under the control of the neighbouring island of Wallis.

Mr Jego says the priority for the island is to be assured of an air link, with France having opened a new runway.
