A Fiji special envoy to Kiribati has held talks with a Cuban representative in Tarawa about a Cuban offer for bilateral cooperation.
The envoy, Ross Ligairi, says he will follow up the matter to ensure that Fiji benefits from the Cuban offer.
Kiribati is one of several countries in the region to have accepted doctors from Cuba.
The interim government in Fiji says Mr Ligairi has also met the Kiribati president Anote Tong, with both men highlighting a wish for closer co-operation.
Over the next four weeks, Mr Ligairi is also to use his role as roving ambassador to visit eight more regional countries which belong to the Pacific Islands Forum.
The trip comes ahead of the Forum leaders' planned meeting in Papua New Guinea in December to discuss the Fiji crisis.
Forum foreign ministers have found that there's no practical barrier for Fiji to hold elections by March but the interim regime has rejected its earlier commitment and deferred a return to democracy until it deems the situation to be suitable.
