The French Polynesian President Gaston Tong Sang has led a delegation to New Caledonia in a further sign that the two French territories are reviving ties which had cooled in the past decades.
Mr Tong Sang has visited the Goro Nickel site in the company of new Caledonia's President, Harold Martin, and is due to meet local and French leaders and church representatives.
A bilateral agreement is expected to be signed on Wednesday after talks about economic co-operation.
The previous leaders of the two territories, Jacques Lafleur and Gaston Flosse, had a tense relationship although Mr Lafleur visited Papeete in 2003 when the then French president, Jacques Chirac, hosted the first French summit with Pacific Island leaders.
