Northern Marianas Governor says oveturning a federal law will be an uphill struggle

The Northern Marianas Governor Benigno Fitial has acknowledged the difficulty of overturning a law that will impose federal immigration rules on the Commonwealth next year.

He says he accepts it will be an uphill battle to win the suit to stop the new federal immigration law from being implemented.

Mr Fitial says by ignoring the objections he had raised since the law was first drafted, the U.S. Congress had left him no choice but to turn to the court.

He says negotiation, particularly in the case of the labour provisions at the center of his lawsuit, is no longer an option.
