PNG to get second television channel during 33rd independence day celebrations

As part of tomorrow's independence day celebrations in Papua New Guinea a second television channel is being launched.

The state owned National Television Service is expected to broadcast briefly in several centres before being launched fully around the middle of next year.

The NTS, to be staffed by personnel from the state radio broadcaster, is being geared to carry government material with departments told to budget for TV programming.

But Peter Aitsi, who chairs Transparency International PNG and runs radio stations there, says there is an opportunity for a second television channel in PNG.

"In terms of the economics of it that needs to be proven, but if it is supported by the Government then I would say that they would obviously want their material broadcast fairly regularly and it will be up to the viewers then to distinguish between what is Government propaganda and what they would like to then see as good locally produced material - documentaries or programmes."
