Ousted Fiji PM labels charter consultation process a waste of time

Fiji's ousted Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase, believes the consultation process over the proposed People's Charter will be a waste of resources.

A consultation campaign was launched by the interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, last night.

The draft has been sent out in three languages and is accompanied by a pamphlet on electoral reform.

People will be asked to sign a questionnaire indicating whether they support the charter or not.

But Mr Qarase says this process won't provide a clear and accountable result:

"It won't be transparent, we all know that anyone sitting in an office can do all that and right just yes, yes, yes on these pieces of paper. So I'm sure that this is being orchestrated to ensure that there is some indication of support which is really not there."

The Head of the Secretariat providing support for the Charter, John Samy, says there will be monitors to ensure people are able to express their opinion free of any pressure.
