The Te Papa Museum in Wellington says a new exhibition gives a unique insight in the life and work of the Samoan-born graphic artist, Joseph Churchward.

Mr Churchward has hand designed almost 600 fonts that feature on billboards, record sleeves, newspapers, and in digital media the world over.

The museum's Pacific cultures curator says the exhibition features pencil sketches, print negatives, photographs and newspaper clippings of his work.

Safua Akeli says she hopes the exhibition will inspire many visitors.

"It's overdue recognition to an artist who has contributed not only to New Zealand, Aotearoa, but to the world of his amazing talent and craftsmanship -- typography."

Safua Akeli says the exhibition will run until February.
